Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
