British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
