California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
For the first time in 25 years, every region of California is facing drought conditions. This significant achievement arrives after challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and challenged its enormous farming industry.
An Update Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that the entire state is without dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from weeks of significant storms that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
However, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as having no water worries. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.
This snowpack, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for long-term water security. Water officials point out that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to preserving this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
