Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Criticism

Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

“What a appalling and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
