A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was accosted by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose behind the incident is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.

Details of the Attack

Authorities indicated that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a location near the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the site managing the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, it was reported.

"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," authorities confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what appeared to be a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but collapsed a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were discovered at the scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to find their whereabouts," added an official.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, a close relative, expressed the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.

"Words fail me. I am shattered," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a devastating blow."

She requested the citizens to avoid sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's children.
