As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
