The Northern Irish champion celebrates BBC's top sports triumph with double awards.
Just prior to the announcement, a nervous thought raced through his mind. He admitted he was thinking, "Not a Formula 1 star again."
"Tonight represents a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was recognized in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can capitalize on that."
This time around, however, there was no late twist. The result was uncontested, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned team of the year.
Non-Stop Adventures
Instead of opting to stay for the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already thinking about his next sporting adventure. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to Miami.
"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "My plan is for a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Drive to Improve
That said, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he remarked.
"Additional major championships, tour championships, international events, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."
Squad Celebration
Meanwhile, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also applauded golf's remarkable night and his pal's award.
"Those are the memories that will remain with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is really cool," he commented. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood grinned before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Looking Ahead
His goal is to at last capture his first major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.
Football Loyalty
As he was leaving, an additional topic was raised. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"As long as they quit letting in four goals at home," he replied with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a touch of hope around."
On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that the champion golfer is looking on the bright side.
