The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Has the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why not reference the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
