This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
