The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
